Avian Influenza in Animals
China (HPAI H5N1)
Three additional outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza virus have been reported.  One occurred at Qinghai Lake in Hai Hanan prefecture where 2,361 Pallas?s gulls (also known as the greater black-headed gull) were found dead.  At the Shuangheer wetland, Inner Mongolia, 300 black-necked grebes died.  415 brown-headed gulls and bar-headed geese were found dead at the Galongcuo bird island in Tibet.  The exact clade of the strains and source of the virus is unknown.

Taiwan (HPAI H5N2)

Two new cases of the highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza virus have been reported at a duck farm in Taixi Township, Yunlin County and at a poultry farm in Changzhi Township, Pingtung County.  1,540 birds died and the remaining 7,536 were culled to prevent further spread of the disease.  The affected premises have also been quarantined and surrounding farms within a 3 km radius have been placed under intensified surveillance.
